Smarter Combine Questions as Grid

Desired Outcome
Build a “smarter” way of combining Pick Ones > Pick One Multi or Questions > Pick Any Grid where all unique labels are accounted for and any missing codes get filled in as missing. Many times the solutions for combining questions into grids with inconsistent labels/variables are 20+ steps long and a considerable lift for the customer.

See blog post here: [https://www.qresearchsoftware.com/how-to-combine-separate-questions-into-a-grid-in-q|https://www.qresearchsoftware.com/how-to-combine-separate-questions-into-a-grid-in-q|smart-link] which explains that in order to combine to a grid you must have the same code/variables on all questions to combine AND in the same order. There are many times customers (see below for 4 examples) have messy data or data not setup in a great format and they want/need to combine questions in a grid. In order to do so, they have to create lots of intermediate (flattened) variables and many dummy variables that won’t be used for anything else. Further, if they need dummy variables - or even if they have the same variables but just in a different order on the questions - they have to line them up in order manually before being able to combine. It seems that ordering the labels and filling in missing labels with missing data could be done within an automation rather than by the user. Also in Displayr you can’t change labels of variables in bulk like in Q, making things even more tedious.

Combine variables without them being in the same order

A user wanted to combine variables but because the variable being combined into a numeric grid was not in the same order it failed. Once reordered it worked as expected.

Better grid structure diagnostics

When Displayr can’t automatically pickup how to structure a grid question. Would be great if user could click into grid error message “This grid variable set must have at least 2 rows and 2 columns recognizable from its variable labels” or a diagnostics button to see what exactly the issue is. i.e. “missing variable for row-column, these variable names have no matches a,b,c, only one dimension was found in labels, etc” The issue with the grid question was there was only columns in the labels and a couple labels were missing a word. Usually grid questions have TONS of variables and checking all those manually is a pain, esp since you can’t copy and paste variable labels into/out of Displayr like you can in Q.

Make Pick Any Grids easier to set up when missing variables

Currently,
Pick Any - Grid
questions are hard to set up when there are some missing variables. Users need to manually create dummy variables and place them in the correct location with the correct labels, but this is prone to errors.
